The institute was established at Nagpur in the year 1958 as Central Public Health Engineering Research Institute (CPHERI). The Institute was renamed in 1974 as National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). The activity at the institute is broadly classified as R & D activities and Technical Services. The institute has five Zonal Centers at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad. Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Division at NEERI has been engaged in research and development of scientific management of solid waste for more than four decades. The primary focus of the solid waste management has been shifting over the years from quantification and characterization of solid waste in early years to reuse, recycle, and energy recovery from solid waste in recent years. This division has been contributing significantly to municipal solid waste management (MSWM) with emphasis on biotechnological applications in solid waste management keeping in view of the contemporary focus of the research.
